Frequently asked questions
Which is better for metal and shredding?
The Sun Valley Super Shredder PT FR is designed specifically for metal and extended-range playing, with a Floyd Rose bridge, hot EMG humbuckers, and a fast Thin-C neck. The PT Special is not voiced for metal and lacks a tremolo system.
Which is better for blues and traditional rock?
The PT Special excels in blues and rock with its Diamond pickups (warm neck, punchy bridge), Series-Parallel tone control, vintage hardware, and 12" fretboard radius that suits expressive bending. The Sun Valley's aggressive EMG voicing and 14" radius are optimized for metal precision, not blues expression.
What is the difference in fretboard radius and what does that mean?
The Sun Valley has a 14" radius (flatter), which reduces string buzz during aggressive fast playing and divebombs. The PT Special has a 12" radius (more curved), which feels more comfortable under the fingers for smooth bending and is gentler on hands during long sessions.
Are both B-stock units playable?
Yes. The Sun Valley has minor cosmetic marks on the fretboard but full playability. The PT Special has a hairline crack in the neck pocket that is cosmetic only and does not affect structural integrity or playability.
