Extended range guitars add strings below the standard low E — a low B on a 7-string, a low F# on an 8-string, and lower still on 9-string instruments — giving one guitar the reach of a guitar and a bass combined. The format powers modern metal, djent, and progressive music, but it is equally at home in jazz, fusion, and film scoring, where the extra register opens chord voicings and melodic lines a 6-string cannot reach.

Two build decisions matter most on an extended range instrument. And fret layout: multi-scale (fanned-fret) guitars give each string its own scale length, so the low strings stay focused while the high strings keep a familiar feel under the fretting hand.
