Frequently asked questions
Can I use either of these pickups in any electric instrument?
No. The Saturday Night Special is designed for electric guitar humbuckers slots. The AJB-5S is engineered exclusively for 5-string jazz bass with specific mounting hardware, pole piece spacing, and electronics configured for bass frequencies and string count.
Which has lower output and cleaner tone?
The Saturday Night Special uses Alnico 4 magnets for moderate output that preserves clean tone clarity. The AJB-5S is a bass pickup with active preamp electronics; output levels and tone character are not directly comparable since they operate in different frequency ranges and use active vs. passive magnet systems.
Do either support switching or modulation options?
The Saturday Night Special includes four-conductor wiring for coil-splitting and series/parallel switching. The AJB-5S features a discrete preamp with dynamic range control but is not described as offering switching capabilities.
Which is better for recording sessions?
Both are listed as suitable for studio sessions within their respective instruments. The Saturday Night Special excels for multi-genre guitar recording; the AJB-5S delivers low-noise, articulate bass tone ideal for tight ensemble recording and jazz contexts.
