Frequently asked questions
Which pickup fits my guitar?
The EMG 707 is engineered for 7-string guitars with extended bass housing and soapbar cavity routing. The EMG 81X is a standard humbucker that fits traditional 6-string guitar cavities. Installing either in the wrong guitar format is not possible without major modification.
Which has higher output and aggression?
The EMG 81X produces 8.50V strum output with close-aperture steel coils designed for maximum aggression and fast transient response. The EMG 707 emphasizes articulation and clarity across seven strings rather than raw output voltage, making the 81X the more aggressive choice for 6-string applications.
Are these both active pickups requiring batteries?
Yes, both are active pickups powered by 9V batteries with 3000+ hours battery life. Both include Solderless Install Systems to simplify setup without soldering required.
Which is better for drop tunings and extended range?
The EMG 707 is specifically designed for 7-string instruments and extended-range drop tunings, with a wide aperture coil design that maintains clarity on lower strings. The EMG 81X is optimized for standard tuning on 6-string guitars.
