What makes the 81-7H different from a standard active pickup?

The 81-7H is scaled specifically for 7-string instruments and optimized for extended-range tunings. Its 1630 Hz resonant frequency and ceramic magnets are tuned to deliver tight low-end and controlled aggression across the extra string, preventing flabbiness or loss of definition in drop tunings.

Do I need to solder this pickup in?

No. The EMG solderless system includes pre-assembled volume and tone potentiometers, output jack, battery clip, and all connectors and cables—everything plugs together with no soldering required.

How long does the battery last?

The 9V battery delivers approximately 3000 hours of playing time, meaning you can go months of typical playing before replacement.

Can I use this pickup in both bridge and neck positions?

Yes. The 81-7H is bridge- and neck-compatible with passive mount housing, so you can install it as a replacement in either position depending on your tonal needs.

What genres is this pickup best suited for?

Metal, djent, progressive, and any style using drop tunings will benefit most from the 81-7H's aggressive midrange and tight lows. It is not recommended for jazz, blues, or folk applications.

Do I pay sales tax on this order?

Sales tax is collected only on orders shipped to California; orders shipped to any other US state are not charged sales tax at checkout when you buy direct from our website. Marketplaces collect sales tax as the facilitator in most states, so the same listed price can cost more there. Buyers remain responsible for any use tax their state applies. Free US shipping and 30-day returns are included.

EMG 81-7H Long Shaft 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Chrome

The EMG 81-7H delivers the signature aggressive midrange and tight low-end response that defines the 81 platform, scaled specifically for extended-range 7-string instruments. This active humbucker combines ceramic magnets with EMG's solderless installation system, making it a straightforward retrofit for bridge or neck positions. The brushed chrome finish offers clean aesthetic appeal while housing serious output capability.

Electrical Performance & Output

Powered by a single 9V battery with an exceptionally long 3000-hour lifespan, this pickup generates a 3.00V RMS output with 4.50V peak voltage and 10kΩ output impedance. The 1630 Hz resonant frequency and 80µA current draw create the tight, articulate character expected from active EMG designs—essential for heavy styles demanding clarity and definition across the extended frequency range of a 7-string, whether tracking in the studio or cutting through a live mix.

Installation & Integration

The EMG solderless system ships with all necessary components: 25k volume and tone potentiometers, battery clip, stereo output jack, pickup in/out bus connectors, and all required cables. This eliminates soldering requirements and allows quick integration into existing or new harnesses, reducing downtime during setup or mid-tour replacements while maintaining reliable connections under road and stage conditions.
