What makes the 81-7XH different from standard 7-string pickups?

The 81-7XH is an active ceramic-magnet humbucker with a resonant peak at 2.25 kHz and close aperture coils, engineered to deliver articulate, midrange-forward tone at extreme gain levels while maintaining clarity in drop tunings. Its high output (1.75 V peak) and focused response are specifically voiced for metal and djent applications on 7-string instruments.

How long does the 9V battery last?

The 81-7XH draws only 80 µA at 9V, yielding approximately 3000 hours of battery life—roughly 4 months of regular playing before replacement is needed.

Is solderless installation really beginner-friendly?

Yes; the solderless construction eliminates the need for a soldering iron and flux cleanup, making installation straightforward for intermediate players and above. No special tools are required beyond basic hex wrenches and a screwdriver.

Will this pickup work in a standard 7-string cavity?

Yes. The 81-7XH housing measures 38 x 89 mm and is designed to fit standard 7-string humbucker cavities without routing or modification.

What genres is this pickup best suited for?

The 81-7XH is engineered for metal, djent, and extended-range playing where aggressive output, articulation, and tight midrange focus are priorities. It is not recommended for jazz, blues, or folk applications.

Do I pay sales tax on this order?

We collect sales tax only on orders shipped to California. Orders shipped to any other US state are charged $0 sales tax at checkout when you buy direct from our website. Marketplaces such as eBay, Reverb and Amazon collect sales tax in nearly every state as marketplace facilitators no matter who the seller is, so the same item at the same price costs less bought direct. Free US shipping and 30-day returns are included. Some states ask buyers to self-report use tax on out-of-state purchases.

EMG 81-7XH 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Black

The EMG 81-7XH is a high-output active humbucker engineered for 7-string instruments, delivering the aggressive, articulate response that defines modern metal and extended-range playing. This ceramic-magnet design cuts through dense tunings with clarity and punch, maintaining note definition even at extreme gain levels. The compact footprint integrates seamlessly into 7-string cavities while the solderless installation minimizes downtime.

Tone & Output Characteristics

The 81-7XH produces a peak output voltage of 1.75 V with an RMS output of 1.25 V, giving you the aggressive front end necessary for modern high-gain applications. A resonant frequency of 2.25 kHz combined with ceramic magnets and close aperture coils creates a focused, midrange-forward response that excels at articulation and sustain without sacrificing clarity in dense chord voicings.

Electronics & Installation

This active pickup runs on a 9V battery with exceptionally low current draw—80 µA @ 9V—yielding approximately 3000 hours of battery life before replacement. The solderless construction and 10 kΩ output impedance make installation straightforward, while the -91 dBV output noise floor ensures signal integrity without hum or artifacts.
