What comes in the box and what do I need to install this pickup?

The 81-8H includes a Quik-Connect cable, prewired split shaft volume/tone control set, battery clip set, output jack, and all mounting hardware (screws and springs). You'll need to have an 8-string humbucker cavity on your guitar; the pickup mounts directly into standard cavities on Ibanez, Schecter, ESP, and similar 8-string instruments.

Is this pickup good for genres other than metal?

The 81-8H is specifically voiced for metal, djent, and progressive music where tight low end and articulate aggression are priorities. It is not recommended for jazz, blues, or folk styles, which require different tonal characteristics.

How does the active electronics differ from a passive pickup?

The 81-8H uses integrated preamp circuitry to deliver a strong, noise-free signal with minimal impedance loss, regardless of cable length. This means cleaner tone and more consistent output across longer cable runs compared to passive pickups, and the battery clip set is included for powering the active electronics.

Will this pickup fit my 8-string guitar?

The 81-8H is designed for standard 8-string humbucker cavities and maintains proper string spacing across all eight strings. It is compatible with leading 8-string instruments from Ibanez, Schecter, ESP, and other manufacturers that use standard humbucker routing.

What skill level do I need to install this?

Installation is suitable for intermediate to advanced players; the complete mounting hardware and prewired control set are included, and the Quik-Connect cable simplifies wiring. If you've installed pickups before, this swap should be straightforward.

Do I pay sales tax on this order?

Sales tax is collected only on orders shipped to California; orders shipped to any other US state are not charged sales tax at checkout when you buy direct from our website. At a typical 7% rate that is an estimated $10 less at checkout than the same listed price on a marketplace, which collects sales tax as the facilitator in most states. Buyers remain responsible for any use tax their state applies. Free US shipping and 30-day returns are included.

EMG 81-8H 8-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Brushed Black Chrome

The EMG 81-8H is built for 8-string players who need a pickup that cuts through low tunings with aggression and clarity. This high-output active humbucker delivers the tight, articulate response that defines modern metal and progressive rigs—punchy mids, controlled sustain, and solid low-end grip across all eight strings. The brushed black chrome finish matches contemporary 8-string instrument aesthetics, and the compact footprint is voiced specifically for proper string spacing on extended-range guitars.

Active Electronics & Output

The integrated active preamp generates a strong, noise-free signal that remains consistent whether you're running 50 feet of cable to a pedalboard or direct to a mixing console. You get the full output punch without the impedance sag of passive pickups, critical for live rigs where signal integrity matters. The included battery clip set and Quik-Connect cable make installation straightforward, and the prewired split shaft volume/tone control set drops into most 8-string wiring schemes without rewiring.

Installation & Compatibility

The 8-string format fits standard humbucker cavities on Ibanez, Schecter, ESP, and other 8-string platforms. All hardware ships with the pickup—mounting screws, springs, output jack, and battery clip—so there's no hunting for extra parts before you can dial in your tone. The prewired controls and Quik-Connect system mean you can get this installed and onstage without custom work.
