Is this pickup suitable for drop tunings and extended-range playing?

Yes—the 81-8H is engineered specifically for 8-string configuration and excels in drop tunings. Its tight, articulate response and ceramic magnet construction maintain definition and string separation even at extreme tunings and with high-gain amplification.

What does active mean, and what does it require?

Active means the pickup has built-in amplification powered by a 9V battery. This delivers consistent output, low noise, and crystal-clear definition across all frequencies without the impedance issues of passive designs.

What genres and playing styles is the 81-8H best for?

It is optimized for metal, progressive, and high-gain applications where definition and aggression matter. It is not voiced for jazz, blues, or folk styles.

Will this fit my 8-string guitar?

The 81-8H is a direct replacement for factory 8-string pickup cavities and accommodates the wider string spacing of modern extended-range guitars. Verify your current pickup cavity matches standard 8-string dimensions before ordering.

What finish color is included?

This pickup features a brushed gold finish, which provides both aesthetic distinction and electromagnetic shielding for noise rejection in demanding studio and live environments.

Do I pay sales tax on this order?

Sales tax is collected only on orders shipped to California; orders shipped to any other US state are not charged sales tax at checkout when you buy direct from our website. At a typical 7% rate that is an estimated $10 less at checkout than the same listed price on a marketplace, which collects sales tax as the facilitator in most states. Buyers remain responsible for any use tax their state applies. Free US shipping and 30-day returns are included.

EMG 81-8H 8-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Brushed Gold

The EMG 81-8H delivers the aggressive, articulate voice that defines modern extended-range metal and progressive music. This active humbucker maintains crystal-clear string separation across all eight strings while maintaining the tight, punchy character players expect from the legendary 81 design. The brushed gold finish adds visual distinction to your instrument's electronics.

Live Performance & Electronics

As an active design, the 81-8H operates on a 9V battery, providing consistent output and low noise across the full frequency spectrum. On stage, the pickup delivers tight lows, focused midrange, and controlled highs—critical for drop tunings, palm muting, and high-gain rigs where every note needs to cut through. No drop in definition under load, no noise surprises mid-set.

Reliability & Construction

Purpose-built for eight-string instruments, the 81-8H geometry accommodates the wider string spacing and extended frequency demands of modern extended-range guitars. The brushed gold cover offers both aesthetic appeal and electromagnetic shielding for noise rejection in demanding studio and live environments—designed to handle the road and keep working gig after gig.
