Is the EMG 81-8H compatible with my 8-string guitar?

Yes, the 81-8H is built to standard humbucker cavity specifications and works with dual-humbucker 8-string configurations using standard humbucker connectivity. Verify your guitar has a humbucker cavity bridge position before purchasing.

What power requirements does this pickup have?

The 81-8H requires a standard 9V battery to power its active circuitry. The active preamp delivers boosted signal strength and reduced noise floor as long as the battery remains charged.

Is this pickup suited for jazz or blues playing?

No, the 81-8H is optimized for metal, progressive, and high-gain applications. Its aggressive tone profile, fast attack, and punchy midrange are engineered for extended-range and drop-tuning styles rather than blues or jazz contexts.

What makes the active design better than passive pickups for 8-string?

Active electronics provide boosted output and reduced impedance, which means consistent signal strength and minimal noise regardless of cable length. This is especially valuable for extended-range tunings where low-end clarity and articulation demand a tight, controlled response.

How does the EMG 81-8H compare to other 8-string pickup options?

The 81-8H competes with models like the Seymour Duncan Blackout 8-String, DiMarzio Crunchlab 8-String, and Fishman Fluence Modern 8-String. EMG's active design prioritizes defined low-end and punchy midrange; choose based on whether you prefer active vs. passive circuitry and tonal character.

Do I pay sales tax on this order?

Sales tax is collected only on orders shipped to California; orders shipped to any other US state are not charged sales tax at checkout when you buy direct from our website. At a typical 7% rate that is an estimated $10 less at checkout than the same listed price on a marketplace, which collects sales tax as the facilitator in most states. Buyers remain responsible for any use tax their state applies. Free US shipping and 30-day returns are included.

EMG 81-8H 8-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Gold

The EMG 81-8H is built for 8-string guitars that demand aggressive, articulate high-gain tones without compromise. This active humbucker maintains tight, defined response across the wider string spacing and lower tunings that define modern metal and progressive genres. The gold finish adds visual distinction while the active electronics ensure consistent output and minimal noise floor regardless of cable length or ambient conditions—critical for touring players who need reliable tone night after night.

Tone & Output Characteristics

Active circuitry provides boosted signal strength and reduced impedance, resulting in punchy midrange articulation and fast attack ideal for palm-muted riffs and lead work on extended-range tunings. The design prioritizes clarity in the low end without sacrificing the upper-midrange presence that cuts through dense mixes on stage.

Construction & Compatibility

Built to specification for 8-string humbucker cavities, this pickup integrates with standard dual-humbucker 8-string configurations. The active preamp requires standard 9V battery power, delivering dependable performance across extended playing sessions and long tours.
