What skill level do I need to install the EMG 81X?

The 81X is designed for intermediate to advanced players and techs. It includes solderless connectivity, a prewired split-shaft control set, and a complete hardware package with Quik-Connect cable, making installation faster than traditional soldered pickups—though basic wiring knowledge or professional installation is still recommended.

How long does the battery last?

The 9V battery runs approximately 3000 hours, which typically means years of regular playing before replacement. At 80 microamps current draw, the 81X is extremely efficient, so you rarely need to change the battery and can rely on extended sessions without power concerns.

Is the EMG 81X suitable for jazz or blues?

No—the 81X is optimized for metal, hard rock, modern rock, and high-gain tones with fast note separation and articulate clarity. Its punchy midrange and controlled treble are engineered for aggressive playing styles; jazz and blues players typically prefer warmer, more nuanced pickup voicings.

What's included in the box?

The package includes the active humbucker with brushed chrome finish, a prewired split-shaft volume/tone control set, output jack, battery clip set, Quik-Connect cable, mounting screws, and springs—everything needed for a complete bridge-position installation.

How does the EMG 81X compare to other high-output pickups?

The 81X is comparable to the Seymour Duncan Blackout and DiMarzio Crunch Lab but distinguishes itself with active circuitry, exceptional battery life, and the signature EMG clarity in a compact, noise-rejecting covered design optimized for modern rock and metal applications.

EMG 81X Active Humbucker Pickup in Brushed Chrome

The EMG 81X delivers the articulate, high-output aggression that modern rock and metal players demand, with exceptional clarity and definition for tight articulation and fast note separation. Built for bridge position duty, this active humbucker excels in high-gain rigs where every note needs to cut through. The brushed chrome finish offers a refined look while the compact design fits most bridge cavities without routing.

Active Electronics & Power

The active circuitry operates at 80 microamps at 9V, drawing minimal current for extended battery life of approximately 3000 hours—meaning you'll play dozens of gigs on a single battery change. The included battery clip set makes swap-outs quick and painless, so you spend more time on stage and less time troubleshooting power.

Output & Tone Character

A 10K DC resistance ceramic magnet configuration delivers the signature EMG clarity with punchy midrange and controlled treble that cuts through dense mixes. The covered design maintains consistent output and rejects noise interference—essential for clean signal chains and reliable live sound from rehearsal through tour.
