Description
EMG 85-7H 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Chrome
The EMG 85-7H delivers the articulate, controlled aggression that defines modern 7-string playing. This active humbucker pairs tight coil geometry with Alnico V magnets to lock in definition across extended ranges, making it the workhorse choice for djent, progressive metal, and high-gain applications where note separation matters.
Tone & Electronics
Medium output and close aperture coils yield a focused, punchy character without the mushiness that plagues passive designs at saturation. The active 9V system ensures consistent frequency response and eliminates impedance loading issues—your tone stays locked in regardless of cable length or amp input.
Design & Build
Chrome finish resists oxidation and maintains visual clarity under stage lighting. Solderless connectivity and included potentiometers (both 25k with 9.5 mm shaft length) speed installation, while the comprehensive cable and connector package—stereo output jack, battery bus, dual pickup bus, mounting hardware—leaves nothing to source separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pickup suitable for jazz or blues?
No. The 85-7H is voiced for djent, progressive metal, and high-gain styles where tight lows and articulate response matter most. Jazz and blues players should consider alternative pickups better suited to those tonal palettes.
What's included in the box?
The 85-7H comes with solderless connectors, two 25k potentiometers (9.5 mm shaft), a stereo output jack, battery bus, dual pickup bus, mounting hardware, and a comprehensive cable package—everything needed for installation.
Can I use this in both neck and bridge positions?
Yes. The 85-7H is compatible with both neck and bridge positions in 7-string instruments and delivers the same focused, punchy character in either location.
How does the active system affect tone consistency?
The 9V active circuit maintains stable frequency response and eliminates impedance loading issues caused by cable length or amp input variations, so your tone stays locked in across different rigs and cable setups.
How does this compare to the EMG 81-7H?
The 85-7H has medium output with a tighter, more articulate character focused on note definition; the 81-7H is the hotter, more aggressive variant. The 85 is ideal for controlled precision in extended-range playing.
