What tuning styles and genres is this pickup best suited for?

The 85-7HX excels in metal, progressive, and extended-range contexts, particularly with drop tunings on 7-string guitars. Its tight low end and articulate midrange make it less ideal for jazz or folk applications.

How long does the battery last, and how often will I need to replace it?

The 9V battery provides approximately 3000 hours of playing time before replacement, meaning regular players can expect several months of use between changes.

Do I need soldering skills or special tools to install this pickup?

No. The solderless wiring system allows drop-in installation without a soldering iron, making it accessible for players with any level of technical experience.

How does the output level work with high-gain amplifiers?

The pickup delivers 1.25V RMS and 1.75V peak output with -89 dBV noise, providing sufficient gain for high-gain rigs while maintaining clarity across the frequency spectrum.

What makes the brushed gold finish different from standard black pickups?

The brushed gold finish is a visual distinction that adds aesthetic presence to your instrument while maintaining the same active electronics and performance characteristics as the standard EMG 85-7H.

Do I pay sales tax on this order?

Sales tax is collected only on orders shipped to California; orders shipped to any other US state are not charged sales tax at checkout when you buy direct from our website. At a typical 7% rate that is an estimated $10 less at checkout than the same listed price on a marketplace, which collects sales tax as the facilitator in most states. Buyers remain responsible for any use tax their state applies. Free US shipping and 30-day returns are included.

The 1.25V RMS output and 1.75V peak output provide sufficient gain for high-gain amplifiers while maintaining clarity across the frequency spectrum, backed by -89 dBV output noise for a clean signal path.

Power & Reliability

This active design runs on a single 9V battery with an exceptional 3000-hour battery life, keeping you powered through extensive touring and session work. The integrated solderless wiring system eliminates the need for a soldering iron, enabling quick swaps and straightforward drop-in installation on the road or at home.
