Description

EMG 89R Active Humbucker Pickup in White

The EMG 89R is built for players who refuse to choose between single-coil snap and humbucker power. Its reversed-coil design and independent preamps for each mode deliver articulate single-coil clarity in one configuration and thick, noise-free humbucker authority in the other—all from a single installation. The white finish sits cleanly in modern and classic rigs alike.

Dual-Mode Architecture & Onstage Reliability

The 89R operates in both single-coil and dual-coil modes, giving you distinct sonic character to match the song or set. Single-coil mode hits 0.6V RMS with a 3.75 kHz resonant peak for cutting definition and articulation, while humbucker mode generates 1.0V RMS at 2.55 kHz for full body and hum rejection. Each mode has its own output and preamp—no compromise, no bleed-through, just two voices in one pickup.

Build & Setup

The Alnico V magnet and reversed-coil geometry place the single-coil closer to the neck for enhanced note separation in that mode. Installation runs fast via the solderless 2-wire connection system, and the accessory kit handles everything you need to get it mounted and playing without downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between single-coil and humbucker mode on the 89R?

Single-coil mode delivers 0.6V RMS output at 3.75 kHz resonant frequency for articulate highs and punch, while humbucker mode produces 1.0V RMS at 2.55 kHz for fuller low-mids and reduced noise. Each mode has its own independent preamp and output, so you're not compromising tone in either configuration.

How long will the battery last?

At 152 microamps current draw on a 9V battery, the 89R provides approximately 3,290 hours of battery life, which translates to several months of regular use before replacement is needed.

Is this pickup easy to install?

Yes. The EMG 89R uses a solderless 2-wire Quik-Connect system and includes a complete accessory kit with prewired push/pull volume and tone controls, output jack, battery clip, and mounting hardware to simplify installation on any workbench.

What genres is the 89R best suited for?

The 89R excels in studio sessions, extended-range playing, gigging, and progressive music where tonal flexibility and low noise are priorities. It is not optimized for traditional jazz or folk playing styles.

How does the reversed-coil design affect tone?

The reversed-coil geometry positions the single-coil closer to the neck, which enhances articulation and definition in single-coil mode. Combined with the Alnico V magnet, this delivers a warm, defined response across both operating modes.
