Description
EMG 909 9-String Active Soapbar Pickup in Ivory
The EMG 909 is a high-output active soapbar engineered for extended-range instruments, delivering the articulate aggression and tight low-end response that nine-string players demand on stage and in the studio. Its compact form factor integrates seamlessly into modern instrument designs while maintaining the responsive, controlled character EMG's active electronics are known for. This pickup excels in both palm-muted rhythmic work and sustained lead passages, offering exceptional clarity across the extended frequency range whether you're cutting through a live mix or tracking in isolation.
Active Electronics & Power Performance
The 909 operates on a 9V battery supply with an efficient 400 microamp draw, yielding approximately 1250 hours of battery life on a standard 500mAh cell—enough for extended tours without surprises. Output sits at 2.00V per string and 4.50V peak on strummed passages, with a resonant frequency of 1.90 kHz that prioritizes midrange definition and harmonic clarity for cutting presence in a full band context. The extremely low noise floor of -104 dBV ensures clean operation even when stacking multiple pickups or pushing front-end gain, critical for reliable live performance.
Build & Integration
Built on an Alnico V magnet core, the 909 handles up to 3.50" string width comfortably, accommodating modern extended-range instruments without compromise. Cable runs are pre-sized for standard wiring layouts: 15" pickup cable, 6" output cable, and 7" battery cable, with included 25K volume and tone potentiometers, stereo output jack, pickup bus system, and all necessary mounting hardware for straightforward installation and quick troubleshooting on the road.

Frequently Asked Questions
What genres and playing styles is the EMG 909 best suited for?
The 909 excels in metal, djent, progressive, and extended-range playing—especially for rhythmic palm-muting and sustained lead passages. It is not designed for jazz, blues, or folk applications.
What is the battery life, and how often will I need to replace it?
The 909 draws 400 microamps and delivers approximately 1250 hours of battery life on a standard 9V, 500mAh battery—roughly 50+ days of continuous play or several months of typical use. Battery life extends further with lower overall current draw across multiple pickups in a single instrument.
What string widths does the EMG 909 accommodate?
The pickup handles up to 3.50 inches of string width comfortably, making it compatible with modern nine-string and extended-range instrument designs.
What comes included, and how difficult is installation?
The package includes 25K volume and tone potentiometers, pre-sized cables (15 inch pickup, 6 inch output, 7 inch battery), stereo output jack, pickup bus system, and all necessary mounting hardware. Installation follows standard wiring layouts and is straightforward for intermediate to advanced builders.
How does the EMG 909 compare to other nine-string active pickups?
The 909 competes with the Seymour Duncan Blackout 9-String, Fishman Fluence Modern 9-String, and DiMarzio Crunch Lab 9-String. It emphasizes articulate aggression, tight low-end control, and exceptional clarity with an extremely low noise floor—a direct match for players prioritizing precision and midrange definition over maximum output.
