What does active mean, and why would I want an active pickup?

Active pickups include a built-in preamp powered by a battery, providing stronger output, noise reduction, and the ability to shape tone with included controls. The EMG PCS delivers consistent, hum-free signal and lets you dial in punch and definition right at the source—useful for cutting through live mixes or laying down clear bass tracks in recording.

Is the EMG PCS easy to install if I've never done pickup work?

Yes; the solderless wiring system eliminates traditional soldering, and the kit includes mounting screws, wiring cables, tone and volume pots, and a battery bus for straightforward integration. Most intermediate players can install it without professional help, though bass-specific knowledge of routing and cavity work still applies if you're modifying an existing instrument.

What styles of bass music is the PCS best suited for?

The PCS excels in funk, rock, and progressive genres where punchy midrange and articulate definition are priorities. It is not recommended for traditional jazz or folk styles, which typically favor rounder, warmer passive pickup tones.

How does the EMG PCS compare to other active bass pickups?

The PCS offers a smoother, more refined character than EMG's original P pickup design while maintaining modern punch and deep low-end control. It compares favorably to the Seymour Duncan Ultra Jazz and Bartolini BC4 for players prioritizing noise-free clarity and mid-forward presence in rock and funk contexts.

What comes in the box?

The kit includes the PCS pickup, tone and volume potentiometers, battery bus, stereo output jack, mounting screws, wiring cables, and complete solderless wiring components—everything needed for a full active bass setup.
