Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the Custom 5 and the SH-5 or SH-11?
The Custom 5 swaps in an Alnico 5 magnet instead of the ceramic or Alnico 2 found in the SH-5 and SH-11, delivering a more vintage character with less distortion but still very strong output. You'll hear richer, fuller clean tones with enhanced presence compared to those models.
What genres and playing styles is this pickup built for?
The Custom 5 excels in blues, classic rock, country, pop, and hard rock. It's designed for warm, vintage tones rather than extreme gain, so it's not optimized for thrash metal or djent styles.
What does the four-conductor cable do, and will I need soldering skills?
The four-conductor hookup cable comes with the pickup and allows for coil-tapping and phase-reversal options if your guitar's wiring supports it. Installation requires soldering; we recommend having a qualified tech install it if you're not experienced.
Should I pair this with a neck pickup, and if so, which one?
Pairing the Custom 5 bridge with a Seymour Duncan '59 neck pickup is a classic combination that delivers authentic P.A.F. tones across the fretboard. However, the Custom 5 can work solo depending on your tone preferences.
Does this pickup come in other options or configurations?
Yes, the Custom 5 is available with a nickel or gold-plated cover, as a Trembucker, and in a 7-string version. The standard bridge model is recommended for balanced and warm instruments, especially those with rosewood fingerboards.
