Description
EMG SAX/SAX/89X Active Single Coil Pickup Set in Black
The EMG SAX/SAX/89X is a versatile active pickup configuration built for players who need flexible single-coil and hybrid tonal options without losing output consistency. This set pairs two SAX single-coil pickups with the innovative 89X dual-mode component, delivering controlled dynamics and clarity across multiple voicings from a compact footprint that cuts through live mixes with authority.
Design & Specifications
The 89X functions as an active hybrid, combining Alnico V magnet technology with separate preamps and coils that toggle between humbucker and single-coil character. Its compact mounting footprint—69.9 × 38.1 × 22.9 mm with 78.5 mm screw spacing—integrates into standard guitar cavities without modification. All components feature solderless connectors for reliable, quick installation and roadworthy dependability on the road.
Electronics & Performance
This active system runs on a single 9V battery, delivering medium output with the clarity and articulation expected from EMG's USA manufacturing standards. The dual-mode architecture of the 89X grants access to both humbucker fatness and single-coil snap within one component, while the paired SAX pickups provide consistent single-coil response across the neck for stable performance through an entire set.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the SAX pickups and the 89X component?
The two SAX pickups deliver consistent single-coil snap and clarity across the neck, while the 89X is a dual-mode hybrid that lets you toggle between humbucker and single-coil character in one position. Together they give you flexible voicing options without sacrificing output or installation space.
Does this set require any guitar modification to install?
No—the 89X's compact footprint of 69.9 × 38.1 × 22.9 mm fits standard guitar cavities without routing, and all components use solderless quick-connect connectors for tool-free assembly.
What genres and playing styles is this pickup set designed for?
This set excels in progressive, indie, studio sessions, and extended-range playing. It is not recommended for traditional jazz or blues, where its articulate single-coil character and hybrid versatility may not align with classic tonal expectations.
What kind of output level should I expect?
The SAX/SAX/89X delivers medium output with controlled dynamics and clarity, balancing single-coil snap with active preamp consistency. This output profile works well for clean recording tones and driven amp tones without excessive noise.
How long does the 9V battery last?
Battery life depends on playing hours and system draw; EMG active pickups typically sustain several months of regular use on a single 9V battery. Always keep a spare battery on hand for sessions and gigs.
