Description
Seymour Duncan Phat Cat Nickel Pickup Set
The Phat Cat Nickel brings genuine P-90 warmth into any humbucker-routed guitar without modification, bridging vintage single-coil character with modern hum-cancellation and stage reliability. These hand-built pickups deliver that articulate midrange punch and woody sustain that cuts through a live mix while staying transparent across gain levels—a retrofit solution for players chasing authentic blues and classic rock tone on guitars already wired for humbuckers.
Tone & Live Character
Dual Alnico 2 bar magnets and 8.0 kOhm neck / 8.5 kOhm bridge resistance produce warm, woody fundamentals with pronounced midrange presence and smooth treble response. The 6.05 kHz resonant peak emphasizes the natural bloom of blues, jazz, and classic rock tones while maintaining definition across gain levels.
On-Stage Build & Reliability
Vacuum wax potting eliminates microphonic feedback and unwanted squeal—critical for live performance and high-gain situations—while the reverse wind/reverse polarity neck pickup cancels hum when both pickups engage together. Nickel silver bottom plates and nickel metal covers provide shielding and a refined appearance, with construction completed by hand in Santa Barbara, CA.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do these pickups require routing my guitar?
No—the Phat Cat Nickel uses a single-coil P-90 Soapbar design housed in a humbucker-compatible retrofit size, so they drop into any standard humbucker cavity without modification.
What genres and playing styles work best with these pickups?
They excel in blues, jazz, and classic rock where warm, woody tone and articulate midrange punch shine. They are not recommended for metal or thrash metal styles that demand higher output and sharper treble response.
How do these pickups handle feedback and noise?
Vacuum wax potting eliminates microphonic feedback and squeal, while the reverse wind/reverse polarity neck pickup cancels hum when both pickups are engaged together for noiseless paired operation.
What's included in the set?
The set includes a neck pickup (SPH90-1n, 8.0 kOhm), a bridge pickup (SPH90-1b, 8.5 kOhm), nickel metal covers with integrated shielding, nickel silver bottom plates, and a single-conductor braided shield hookup cable.
How do the Phat Cat Nickels compare to other P-90 options?
Like the Seymour Duncan Antiquity and Lindy Fralin P-90 alternatives, they deliver classic P-90 character, but the Phat Cat Nickel's humbucker retrofit format and vacuum wax potting make them a modern, noise-free choice for guitars already routed for humbuckers.
